EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

Exercise physiology provides enduring solutions to physical issues that can be as a result of injury, illness or lifestyle choice. Exercise addresses more than physical health, it plays a big part in maintaining sound mental health. Research indicates exercises create neuroplasticity to prevent or mitigate degenerative effects of mental illnesses such as Alzheimer’s  or neurogenesis.

Pilates

Created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s who saw the power of a calm mind, he found that  physical activity allowed him to remain in better overall health and mental wellness. Pilates is a form of low impact exercise which can be done with your body weight or through the use of equipment like  a reformer, balls, rings bands and weights. Pilates aims at improving strength, postural control, flexibility and balance which are all important facets of maintaining a healthy life

PERSONAL TRAINING

'Exercise is medicine' but the difference between medicine and poison is the dose and how you use it.Exercising right is key to building a healthy body and mind. Knowing how to squat properly will affect your ability to squat heavier (to achieve a rounder posterior) without injuring yourself. How to exercise right requires expert knowledge about the human body and there is no more qualified person than an accredited exercise physiologist.

DRY NEEDLING

While the name of the procedure may sound intimidating, dry needling is safe, minimally discomforting and often an effective technique for patients with certain musculoskeletal presentations. Dry needling is a treatment performed by skilled, trained therapists, certified in the procedure. A thin monofilament needle penetrates the skin and treats underlying muscular trigger points for the management of neuro musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. It’s important to note dry needling is not the same as acupuncture. It uses similar tools, but that’s where the similarities end.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

Have you ever had a headache that doesn’t seem to go away after a long day (or week) working on the computer? You might have knots in your shoulders! These knots are trigger points which is a local contracture or tight band in a muscle fiber that can disrupt function, restrict range of motion, refer pain or cause local tenderness.  While taking painkillers offer quick relief, it only masks the problem longer. Trigger point therapy is a form of treatment that seeks to relieve pain by applying targeted pressure on the affected areas.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

While it may feel counter intuitive, exercising is an extremely effective form of pain management. Be it endometriosis, chronic joint pain from injury/repetitive strain or maybe a  persistent backache, exercising helps to relieve pain by addressing muscular-skeletal deficits and weaknesses as well as activating the endocrine system that releases “happy” hormones such as endorphins, dopamine and serotonin. It is important to know how much to push your body that it does what it needs to recover well but not so much that it becomes self-jeopardizing.

REHABILITATION

Getting back on your feet after surgery or sickness is a complex thing to do. Knowing how to work with your body, manage the symptoms and ensuring you are not over-doing to prevent further setbacks – these are not for the uninitiated! Let an exercise physiologist do the thinking and planning for you, so you do not re-injure yourself and can focus on the most important bit – Healing!

My Approach

The only bad workout is the one that didn't happen

My passion is helping people become better versions of themselves. This could be at any point of their lives - recovering from an ACL tear, rehabilitation after surgery, chronic disease and pain management or just wanting to keep up with the grandkids, there is no challenge too big or small.

As an EP, my focus is getting the basics right, it could be improving your technique on a specific movement/sport, education to prevent or manage chronic disease and injury or prescribing exercise programs to suit your lifestyle. Once we have the fundamentals down pat, we can build on it to achieve your goals - whether it is to beat osteoporosis or get back to pre-baby body, I strive to keep my exercises and interventions as functional as possible to keep them effective.
